It’s officially tulip time! This month we’ll be planting hundreds and hundreds of fluffy, peony-style tulips in a gorgeous array of colors perfect for spring.
Our tulip bulbs have been pre-chilling in a spare refrigerator since mid-October and – just before Christmas – it’ll be time to plant them out. If you’ve never heard about pre-chilling tulip bulbs, you’re not alone! It’s not something that most people do. We do it to ensure that our tulips get enough cold exposure so that they bloom on tall, strong stems come spring. (If the winter isn’t cold enough for long enough, tulips can be very short or have deformed flowers.)

We’ll also be planting out our ranunculus corms this month. These plants are fussy – they go dormant if it’s too hot, and will rot in the ground if it’s too cold – but they’re well worth the effort. We’ve built a miniature hoop house to keep these plants extra snug during the winter months. If all goes to plan, we should have armloads of these beauties starting in April. We can’t wait!
